Bmw x5 coolant leak expansion tank

Remember Me? I woke up to this morning to a coolant leak under my X5 50i. I didn't notice it leaking when I parked it last night so not sure when it occurred. I popped the hood and found coolant around the reservoir tank.

I thought it maybe leaked out of the cap area. Checking the level it was just below the min.

There was coolant on the underside of the hood, so there was enough pressure to make it splash up. I started up the car, let it warm. Didn't see it leaking at all. I pulled the car forward, leaving it running and looked under the car to find it leaking pretty good, created a small pool.

I moved the car back into my parking spot and it wasn't leaking like it was before. I drove around the block twice to see if I left a trail of coolant which I did, but when I looked under the car is wasn't leaking at that point. I looked under the hood again but didn't see anything leaking. Last edited by carbonM; at AM. Appreciate 0. Looking down at the bottom of the tank where the lower coolant hose attaches, it looks really wet around the connection.

I inspected it further and found its leaking out of the cap into the overflow hole. It's hissing and bubbling in that hole. Maybe just a bad cap? Second Lieutenant. The exact same thing happened to me. The first thing that I did was replace the cap. However, that didn't really work, so I DIYed the whole tank. After that no more leaks! So try replacing the cap first.Pressure testing your BMW X5 cooling system is the best way to find leaks.

However, not everyone has a pressure tester. I would suggest owning one if you plan to maintain your own vehicles. It can save quite a bit of time when locating a cooling system leak. You can also check for leaks without a pressure tester, but results are less accurate and the procedure is time consuming. I will cover pressure testing in this tech article, as well as some tips on checking for leaks without using one.

Always start with a cool engine. If you do not find the leak, warm the engine with the pressure tester installed. At times, leaks will surface as parts expand from engine heat. A cooling system pressure tester is used to pressurize a cooling system and hold at a specified pressure while looking for leaks.

Coolant leaks can be internal ie, head gasket or external ie, radiatorit is important to take these things into consideration when looking for a coolant leak. If you are losing coolant, but not seeing any on the ground, this would likely be an internal coolant leak. Puddles of coolant found under your vehicle would be from an external leak.

Remember to properly clean any coolant that gets on the ground and properly dispose of it.

Modbus coil vs register

Place a drain pan under suspected areas of leaks to minimize coolant spills. Six-cylinder models can develop coolant leaks toward the front of the engine, in places like the radiator outlet sensor, water pump and thermostat. Late 8-cylinder engines can have the same leaks as 6-cylinder models, with the addition of the leaking valley pan of the engine.

A leaking valley pan on an 8-cylinder engine, will usually leak coolant down the rear of the engine, coming down around the bellhousing of the transmission. A pressure tester is the quickest way to find these leaks.

When pressure testing a cooling system, be sure the vehicle is cool and lacks pressure. Then, remove the coolant expansion tank cap green arrow.

Large Image Extra-Large Image. Once the cap is removed, install a pressure tester adapter green arrow to the coolant expansion tank. Pressurize the system to 1. If pressure drops right off, that is a sign of a leak. Look for coolant on the ground. If no coolant reaches the ground, you could have an internal leak. If you suspect a head gasket leak, you need to test the cylinder sealing via a leak down test. If coolant leaks externally, use a flashlight and follow the coolant to its source.

Coolant leaking down the right side of the engine could be the water pump or thermostat. These are the two most common areas. From the bottom of engine, coolant will leak down from the cluster of cooling system components. The water pump has a weep hole where coolant commonly leaks from. The transmission oil cooler helps to reduce transmission fluid temperature via the engine cooling system.

Transmission fluid is pumped through the cooler through one set of channels, while engine coolant is pumped through another set of channels. The engine coolant helps to transfer the heat from the transmission into the cooling system, keeping the transmission operating better. Transmission fluid is extremely sensitive to heat. Most transmission fluids operate at a temperature of about degrees to degrees.

BMW X5 models have a cooler mounted to the lower right of the radiator on a plastic bracket with a thermostat. The cooler can leak from the fins and the sealing O-rings on the bracket.

Remove the lower splash shield and apply pressure to the cooling system. Check the cooler fin area for leaking or signs of engine coolant. Be sure to work with a cool engine and confirm the cooling system lacks pressure before opening the cooling system. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

The car is putting out white smoke. It seems as though oil is entering the combustion chamber and burning out of the exhaust. The oil is either burning or leaking into the fuel system. There is a significant decrease in fuel consumption and the acceleration is affected.

As I was driving there was a warning that the engine has gotten too hot to drive and to pull over immediately and I had it towed to a garage. There were no temperature warning lights or coolant warning lights and coolant level was fine.

BMW does not have a temperature gauge to know if your car is getting hot. Stupid design. See all problems of the BMW X5. My vehicle has the commonly and popularly known weep hole coolant leak. Apparently, BMW has had this problem in previous year model cars, dating back to They have known that this was a flaw in their design.

It would only be fair for BMW to issue a recall on this commonly known issue that seems to affect hundreds of owners of Bmws with the same engines. The coolant leaks on the front side of the engine through a random hole around the engine. It is a rather costly fix due to several components needing to be removed before one can get to the broken part to be replaced.

It is unfair for current owners to have to pay significantly for a car that has a major design flaw. Very unhappy with this current unfortunate discovery. My car suddenly leaked all the coolant out of the car and into the road and my driveway. Thankfully I was almost home when it broke down. I could have been in the freeway or on the street and it would have been a risk of getting hit by other cars if my car just suddenly stalled.

And I was driving with baby on board! I suggest this be investigated, as it's an issue that's apparently very common in the n62 engines. No prior indication of leak. Tank split open and lost all coolant when parked. Searched online and see a large number of people have reported same problem.

Potential for engine damage significant.
